Tourette’s Syndrome
Tourette’s Syndrome, named after Dr. Georges Gilles de la Tourette, was first described in 1985 with an account of nine patients who exhibited symptoms of the disorder. Dr Tourette initially referred to the symptoms as “maladie des tics” or “disease of tics”.
Tourette’s Syndrome is a neurological condition characterised by repetitive, involuntary movements and vocalisations known as tics. Common examples of tics can include blinking, grimacing, grunting, sniffing, eye rolling and many, many more… I HAVE ALL OF THE ABOVE
Current research suggests that the primary cause of Tourette’s Syndrome is an abnormal occurrence in certain areas of the brain, including the basal ganglia, frontal lobes, and cortex.
I was diagnosed at 16, 10+ years later I still don’t understand the science behind it… which is why I am not a scientist!
